How One Little Girl Struggling with Her Practice Saree Gave Us a Big Idea
It started with a small moment that I almost walked past......
I was visiting a dance school an evening — one of those lovely, busy classical dance classes in Vizag where the sound of gajjelu and the guru's counting fills the whole building. As I waited near the entrance, I noticed a young mother crouched on the floor, struggling to drape a practice saree on her daughter. The little girl was about seven or eight years old — small, fidgety, already impatient to go join her friends inside.
The mother was trying her best. She tucked the pallu, it slipped. She re-pinned the kuchhulu, the child turned and it came loose. She tried again. The little girl looked close to tears — not because anything was wrong, but simply because she was seven and she wanted to dance, not stand still while fabric was wrapped around her for the fifth time.
I watched this for a few minutes and one thought kept coming back to me — there has to be a better way.
That evening I sat with this problem. Young children — especially those just beginning their Kuchipudi or Bharatanatyam training — should be spending their energy on dancing, not on managing complicated drapes. Their parents should be dropping them at class confidently, not stressed about whether the saree will stay in place for the next hour. So why not stitch the practice saree? Give it the look and feel of a properly draped saree — but make it something a child can simply step into and go.

Two Models, One Simple Idea — Easy Wear Practice Sarees for Young Dancers
Model 1 — The 1-Piece Stitched Practice Saree
This is a fully stitched, single-piece ready-to-wear practice saree. It is made using our special 3-feet height dance practice sarees — the same short, dancer-friendly sarees designed specifically for classical dance. The kuchhulu (front pleats) are pre-stitched, the pallu is stitched in place, and everything is set. The child steps in, ties a simple knot at the waist, and she is ready. No draping, no pins, no mother crouching on the floor.
It looks exactly like a properly draped practice saree — neat pleats at the front, pallu falling correctly — but it takes less than a minute to wear. For young students between 5 and 12 years especially, this is a game changer. They can even wear it themselves once they get used to it.
Model 2 — The 3-Piece Stitched Practice Set (Kuchipudi Style)
The second model came from a different insight. Many families already have sarees at home — a favourite cotton saree, a beautiful kalamkari, a cherished ikkat — that they would love to use as a practice saree for their child. But draping it correctly every single class day is simply not practical.
So we created the 3-piece model — where we take any saree the family brings us, cut it into three pieces, and stitch it into a custom-fitted practice set. The three pieces are: a pavada (skirt) with the signature Kuchipudi side fan already stitched in, and a separate pallu piece. The student wears her own blouse and legging underneath to match — and she is good to go.
The beauty of the 3-piece model is that it is stitched to the child's exact measurements — so it fits perfectly, moves with her, and stays in place no matter how energetic the class gets. The Kuchipudi side fan is already set beautifully. And because it is made from a saree the family chose themselves, it feels personal and special.
What Practice Sarees Do We Have — and Why We Recently Added New Ones
When we started with our stitched practice sarees, we stocked the classic options — cotton sarees with traditional dancing doll prints and dance mudra patterns. These are cheerful, vibrant, and perfectly suited for young students. The dancing doll and mudra prints give the saree an identity that feels connected to classical dance — children love wearing them.
Over time, as our students grew and their tastes developed, we started hearing the same request again and again — do you have something a little different? Something more unique? Students who had been dancing for a few years already had the regular cotton prints and wanted something that felt more grown-up and special.
That is when we added kalamkari and ikkat practice sarees to our range. Both are rooted deeply in Andhra Pradesh's own weaving and art traditions — kalamkari with its beautiful hand-crafted motifs, ikkat with its bold Pochampally weave. Both look stunning in a dance class setting. Both are practical, breathable, and hold up beautifully through regular use and washing.
So today we carry: classic cotton with dancing doll prints, cotton with dance mudra prints, kalamkari cotton, and Pochampally ikkat — all available as regular 3-feet practice sarees and as stitched 1-piece and 3-piece options. There is something for every age, every budget, and every dancer's personality.
A Note for Dance Teachers and Academy Owners
If you run a dance academy and want all your students in uniform practice wear, the stitched 1-piece practice saree is the perfect solution. Choose one fabric and colour, share your students' measurements with us, and we will stitch a batch to size. Every child walks into class looking neat, uniform, and ready — and no parent needs to worry about draping a saree before drop-off.
A class full of students in matching practice sarees — whether it is a vibrant kalamkari or a classic cotton with mudra prints — creates a visual identity for your academy that parents and students both take pride in.
Sometimes the best ideas come from the simplest moments. A young girl, a harried mother, a saree that would not stay in place — and a question that refused to go away: why not make this easier? If your child is struggling with her practice saree, or if you are a parent dreading the pre-class draping routine every morning, we hope this is the answer you were looking for.
